Reports indicate that when the next-generation GTI arrives, Vernon Hills buyers can expect to see a new and more powerful sport-tuned engine that should produce around 220 hp. This slight increase over last year’s model is definitely a welcome improvement. We have also been told to expect improved handling with a new electronically-controlled locking differential.

In addition to the new third door, it also looks like the GTI will get rear wheel arch extensions, a sporty new exterior design, and a lower roofline. There is bound to be an assortment of other new design elements, but as Volkswagen has kept the GTI strategically camouflaged during test runs, we will just have to sit tight and wait patiently for more details. As of now, we expect the new VW Golf GTI to arrive at Libertyville Volkswagen late in 2012 or possible even early 2013.
